49-Year-Old Woman Dies in I-77 Car Accident

On Thursday, August 10, 2023, Corporal R. L. Paynter, along with Corporal B. D. Gillespie, responded to a tragic car accident on I-77 near the 51.5-mile point.

Theresa Stamer, aged 49 from Riverside, OH, was driving north on I-77 with her daughter when her vehicle went off the road to the left. In an attempt to regain control, Mrs. Stamer steered to the right, crossed both lanes, and hit the guardrail. Subsequently, her vehicle spun out of control and came to a stop on the road.

Following this, a tractor-trailer collided with Mrs. Stamer’s vehicle. Emergency Medical Services transported Mrs. Stamer to Raleigh General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Her daughter sustained minor injuries and was taken to CAMC for treatment.

She is expected to recover. The driver of the tractor-trailer remained unharmed and declined medical assistance. Investigators established the sequence of events by reviewing footage from the tractor-trailer’s camera system.

They also determined that the tractor-trailer driver was unable to avoid the collision with Mrs. Stamer’s vehicle. The investigation is now concluded.
