The iconic Harrods department store’s former owner, Egyptian-born businessman Mohamed Al Fayed, passed away at the age of 94.
His family confirmed his death through a statement released by the Fulham Football Club, stating that he peacefully passed away of old age on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
Early Years and Career Beginnings
Born on January 27, 1929, in Alexandria, Egypt, Al Fayed was the eldest son of an Egyptian primary school teacher from Asyut. He, along with his brothers, established a shipping company in Egypt before relocating its headquarters to Genoa, Italy, and establishing offices in London.
Diverse Business Ventures
Al Fayed’s varied business interests included ownership of the Hôtel Ritz Paris, Harrods department store, and Fulham Football Club, all based in London. At the time of his passing in 2023, his wealth was estimated at US$2 billion, ranking him as the 1,493rd richest person globally.
Personal Life and Relationships
Married to Samira Khashoggi from 1953 to 1956, Al Fayed had a son named Dodi. Dodi gained public attention for his relationship with Diana, Princess of Wales, and both tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. In 1985, Al Fayed married Finnish socialite and former model Heini Wathén, with whom he had four children.
