Hurricane Idalia Preparedness: Evacuation Advice for Jefferson County Residents

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management has given a suggestion for people in low-lying areas to leave their homes voluntarily. This advice also goes for those living in mobile homes, modular homes, and RVs in Jefferson County.

The people in charge of handling emergencies are asking residents to think about going to the home of a relative or friend who lives away from places prone to flooding. Right now, there aren’t any places open where people can go for safety.

Starting at noon on Tuesday and going through Wednesday, the Jefferson County Offices will be closed. An emergency shelter in the county will open its doors at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The address is Jefferson County K-12, 50 David Road, Monticello, FL 32344.

The emergency officials mentioned that as Hurricane Idalia gets closer, once the wind reaches a constant speed of 35 mph, no emergency vehicles will be out on the roads.

Before you leave, the sheriff’s office wants you to:

  • Lock all your doors and windows
  • Put up shutters if needed
  • Turn off all your appliances, faucets, and gas tanks for LP gas
  • Bring enough personal items like hygiene products, water, and food for 3 to 5 days If you need more details, you can call 850-342-0211.
