Richard Legrand the “Watermelon Man”
Richard Legrand the “Watermelon Man”, 86, of Madison, passed away Saturday morning, May 9, 2020 at Monroe Manor Nursing Home.
He was born on April 24, 1934 to Willard and Leta Mae Ragsdale Legrand in Madison, MO. Richard married Pam Petree on April 3, 1983 in Centralia, MO; they were together for 42 years and married for 37 years. Survivors include his wife, Pam; five daughters, Barbara (Dannie) Hendren, Konnie Wilson, Sarah (Allen) Maupin, Tiffany (Michael) Hawkins and Mindy York; two sons, Jimmy (Marilyn) Legrand and Tommy (Jenny) Legrand; fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by; one brother, Larry Legrand; two sons, Jeffrey Paul and David Legrand; and one granddaughter, KC.
Richard graduated from Paris R-II High School in 1952. After high school he farmed, worked at Toastmaster for 10 years and Maytag for 7 ½ years. He was a lifelong member of the Holliday Baptist Church.
Richard was lovingly known as the “Watermelon Man”, which gave him great pleasure as he thoroughly enjoyed growing watermelons and cantaloupes; and the occasional eggplant. He was an avid coon hunter, deer and turkey hunter and fisherman. Richard enjoyed spending time with his family and was truly a “family man”.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Madison Community Center with Pastor Walter Petree III officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at the Madison Community Center from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Holliday.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
